Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov.24

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Drilling oil and gas wells by the National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC) amounted to 252,581 meters in the first eight months of the current year.

NIDC Deputy Managing Director Mehran Makvandi said 101 wells were drilled over the 8-month period, Iran's Shana news agency reported Nov. 24.

He added that 74 drilling rigs are operating at onshore and offshore fields in 10 provinces of the country.

NIDC Managing Director Heidar Bahmani said on Nov. 12 that the oil and gas wells drilling industry has been indigenized in Iran.

Before the [1979] Islamic Revolution, the drilling industry was in the hands of foreigners, he said, adding that now we are competing with them in oil and gas projects.

This is while Mohammad-Reza Takaidi, another deputy director of NIDC, said on September 15 that one hundred percent of the drilling rigs, which have been imported to Iran over the past seven to eight years had been Chinese-made.

He added that 120 drilling rigs are currently operating at the country's oil and gas fields, Iran's ILNA news agency reported.

Twenty drilling rigs are operating at offshore fields and the rest are operating at onshore fields, he added.

NIDC owns 70 drilling rigs, he said, adding that the rest are belonged to the North Drilling Company, Naft Kav, Sepanta, MAPNA, GPTC, and Tadbir companies.
