A top health official in Iran has warned of rising alcohol consumption in the country.

Last year (Iran's solar year ended on March 19), more than 90 people lost their lives because of alcohol poisoning, the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) reports.

In 2011, Iranian law enforcement's seizures of alcoholic beverages also grew by 69 percent over the previous year, and police confiscated 829 drivers' licenses because they tested positive for drugs or alcohol. Of those arrested, 43 were women.

Over the last 11 days, seven people have died and 17 have been hospitalized because of alcohol poisoning.
