A large locomotive production plant was inaugurated in Iran's northern Alborz Province on Tuesday.

The plant has the capacity to manufacture 120 locomotives per year, IRNA News Agency reported.

"Some €480 million plus 1 trillion rials have been invested in the project, which aims to create 750 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs," Fars News Agency quotes Managing Director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways Abdol-Ali Saheb-Mohammadi as saying.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attended the inaugural ceremony.

In March 2011, Iran unveiled a locomotive, which runs on a domestically-made heavy diesel engine.

The 12-cylinder National Heavy Diesel Engine is equipped with a turbocharger. The 3710kg engine is 1.24 meters long and 1.28 meters high, with a maximum torque of 6 thousand 360 N.m and a modern electronic injection system.

The achievement has put Iran among top 12 countries in the world, which possess the technology to produce heavy diesel engines, Ahmadinejad said.
