By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Test flights have been completed at the third airport in Istanbul, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey told Trend Sept. 24.

The ministry noted that the construction of the airport will be carried out in four stages.

"The work on the first stage has been completed, within which a terminal building, a control tower, two runways with a width of 60 meters and a length of 3.75 and 4.1 kilometers, as well as a hangar and a parking area for 347 aircraft have been built," the ministry stated.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey had earlier said that such cargo companies as UPS, DHL and FedEx appealed to the management of the third airport with a request to open their offices at the airport.

At the new airport, 3,500 flights can be carried out daily and there will be a hotel and a parking lot for 25,000 cars.

The first test flight was successfully carried out at the third airport in Istanbul on May 29 under the control of the General Directorate of State Airports Authority of Turkey (DHMI).

The third airport is being built near the Lake Terkos in northern Istanbul.

Currently, flights are operated from Turkey to 282 destinations. After the third airport's commissioning, the number of destinations will increase to 350.

About 300 passenger and service elevators will be installed at Istanbul’s third airport.

Airport City, including shops, logistics and exhibition centers, will also be built at the new airport.

The first airport in Turkey was built in 1912 and was used for military purposes. For the first time the Istanbul airport was opened for international flights in 1953 and in 1985 it was renamed in honor of founder of the Turkish Republic Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
