By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

New Port in Alat settlement of Baku, Azerbaijan, created a powerful distance haul for cargo transportation from Ukraine to Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries, Sergey Shteluk, economic advisor at Ukrainian embassy in Baku, said in an interview with Trend.

The New Port in Alat is a transportation hub linking the west (Turkey & EU), south (Iran & India) and north (Russia). Situated in the vicinity of the regions of Azerbaijan, it will also increase its connectivity as an efficient hub and so increase the volume of cargo being handled. In addition, new port location is linked to existing highways and railways, connecting the port to the inland regions of the country.

“Ukrainian companies particularly use the logistics of Alat port for container transportation to the Caspian Sea region and back to Ukraine. More than 1,000 cargo vehicles of Ukraine used Alat-Aktau and Kuryk (Kazakhstan) route this year,” he said.

At the same time, as Shteluk noted, the port in Alat is also important in terms of cooperation between railway companies of Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TMTM). He pointed out that Ukrzaliznytsya JSC is also participating in TMTM.

“In this regard, partner countries are currently working on the implementation of a new type of transit permit when using the ferry infrastructure of the Alat port in an optimization system for the entire chain of cargo and container transportation, taking into account the transport and logistics potentials of seaports in the Black and Caspian Seas,” he said.

The FEZ is being created in the village of Alat on the basis of the presidential decree signed in March 2016. The territory of the new Baku International Sea Trade Port is also included in this zone.
