US to Mend Azerbaijani Warships

Azerbaijan, Baku/ Trend , corr. I. Khalilova / John Hennick, the Chief of the Public Relations Department of the U. S. Embassy to Azerbaijan, has said today that the US has launched a project to repair warships in Azerbaijan.

In a cooperation programme with NATO, frontier control is predicted to be tightened in Azerbaijan. For this purpose, the US has expressed a readines to repair Azerbaijani warships. The reconstruction of a military aerodrome in Azerbaijan is another direction of the military and defence co-operation between the two countries.

However, according to Mr. Hennick, the American party has not launched negotiations with the Azerbaijani Government on this issue.

The American diplomat also spoke about the purpose of using radars, which the US installed in Azerbaijan.

"The US delivered necessary equipment for two radars to be used in Azerbaijan. Their capabilities are restricted, and they can be used only within Azerbaijan. They cannot cover the territory of Iran. The US cannot receive data from them, since the radars are considered to be for the use of the Azerbaijani Government," concluded Mr.Hennick.
