The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic's (SOCAR) Ecology Department is conducting initial ecological studies that will form the basis of an environmental and social impact report as part of efforts to create a new oil refining complex.

He said the ecological state of the area where the refinery will be built is currently being studied. Work is also being conducted to prepare an environmental impact statement to transfer processing enterprises outside the city.

"The work will be completed by mid-2011," the source said.

After the studies are finished, they will be submitted to SOCAR's head office.

As SOCAR head Rovnag Abdullayev said earlier, the complex envisages the construction of a new oil refinery with a capacity of 10 million tons per year, a gas processing plant with a capacity of 10-15 billion cubic meters and petrochemical enterprises.
