Georgia's CEC spills beans on voter turnout as of noon

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 26. By noon, a whopping 776,726 voters had made their way to the polling stations, which adds up to 22.22 percent of the total voter pool, Trend reports via Georgia's Central Election Commission.

According to the CEC, the highest turnout was recorded in the Racha-Lechkhumi region, hitting a solid 31.15 percent, while the bottom of the barrel was in Adjara, where it barely scraped by at 19.83 percent.

The lay of the land for the vote distribution in the other regions is as follows: Tbilisi - 23.18 percent, Kakheti - 23.89 percent, Mtskheta-Mtianeti - 23.53 percent, Kvemo Kartli - 21.86 percent, Samtskhe-Javakheti - 22.04 percent, Imereti - 22.01 percent, Guria - 21.13 percent.

To note, polling stations in Georgia commenced at 08:00 and will wrap things up at the stroke of 20:00.

A total of 3,508,294 people can vote, including 95,910 abroad. For this legislative election, 3,111 voting stations were set up, including a record 67 abroad. Georgians abroad can vote in 53 cities in 42 countries.

The voting process will be closely monitored by 102 local and 64 international organizations.

This year, a proportional system based on party lists will exclusively elect members of parliament. To win seats in parliament, parties must win at least five percent of the vote.

All in all, there are 18 parties in the race, with five of them joining forces to form coalitions.

The parliamentary election will also introduce the electronic voting system for the first time. Thanks to modern technology, more than 90 percent of ballots are expected to be counted and the results published within an hour after the polls close.
