BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 21. Smear campaigns against Azerbaijan intensify as COP29 approaches, the Chairman of the Temporary Commission on Countering Foreign Interference and Hybrid Threats under the Azerbaijani Parliament Ramid Namazov said at a public discussion themed “Hybrid threats against COP29” in Baku today, Trend reports.

He noted that the parliament has always supported and will continue to support the far-sighted policy pursued by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev for the country's safety and development.

"At the same time, the parliament demonstrates determination within its authority to combat situations that threaten the integrity of our state, our national and spiritual values, as well as our international reputation.

It is also known that next month, Baku will host the 29th session of COP and the 6th session of the Paris Agreement parties' meeting. Considering the high level of participation from heads of state and a large number of participants, we are witnessing an increase in defamatory campaigns against our country as COP29 -one of the largest international conferences in the world - approaches.

The main goal of today’s discussion is to identify who is waging unscrupulous campaigns against our state, as well as to listen to the opinions of deputies and experts," Namazov emphasized.

This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP—the Conference of the Parties—is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin, with its secretariat in Bonn.
