ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, October 21. Turkmenistan has ranked second among countries with citizens holding short-term residence permits in Türkiye from January to October 2024.
Data obtained by Trend from the Turkish Directorate General of Migration Management shows that 59,349 Turkmen citizens obtained short-term residence permits during this period.
Additionally, Turkmen citizens ranked fifth with 7,321 family-type residence permits. Russian citizens lead with 15,006 residents, followed by Azerbaijan with 13,981, and Uzbekistan with 13,841.
Among foreign citizens in Türkiye, Istanbul is the most popular city, hosting 506,288 residents with residence permits. Antalya follows with 120,755, and Ankara ranks third with 68,054 residents.
To note, foreigners can stay in Türkiye visa-free for 30 to 90 days, depending on their nationality. For longer stays, there are six types of residence permits: tourist, medical, family, student, business, and humanitarian. The country issues short-term residence permits for 6 to 12 months and long-term permits for those residing in the country for over eight years.
The significant growth in the number of foreign citizens with residence permits in Türkiye began in 2018, reaching 593,151 individuals. The peak occurred in 2022, when the number exceeded 1.35 million.
In 2023, the total number of residents in Türkiye was over 1.1 million, a decrease of 18.2 percent compared to 2022.
