Network equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc reported a 79-per-cent jump in fourth-quarter profits Wednesday, but its sales rose less than expected because of the slow economy, dpa reported.

The San Jose, California-based company posted net income of 1.9 billion dollars in the fourth quarter, up 79 per cent from 1.1 billion dollars a year ago.

The company said sales were up 27 per cent to 10.84 billion dollars. Analysts has estimated 10.9 billion dollars, Bloomberg financial news reported.

John Chambers, chairman and CEO, said: "Whether the global economy continues to show mixed signals or not - the strength of our financial model and profit generation serves us well.

"We are very confident in our strategy, and will continue to aggressively move into new areas where the network is becoming the platform, and where our customers want us to invest and innovate."
