The Ministry of Transport of Communications and High Technologies of Azerbaijan has formed a working group, whose mandate is to ensure compliance of local legal regulation with the new data protection law of the European Union - the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), the government told Trend.

This issue is on the agenda and the state is interested in involving public organizations in this process, said the government's message.

“Work to protect personal data in Azerbaijan is conducted regularly. Nevertheless, the country's policy in this direction should be enriched. Certain voids, of course, are there, and they must be eliminated. It is necessary to study how the GDPR can influence citizens of non-EU countries, and how it will be applied in general. We believe that it will be easier for us to understand these issues after the EU promulgates the upcoming roadmap,” said the message.

The GDPR entered into force on May 25, 2018. This law applies to any company in the world engaged in the processing and storage of personal data of citizens residing in the EU. The new act gives people more rights regarding the management of their personal data, carried out by companies.

It also provides for large fines for its failure to perform and violates the confidentiality of data - up to four percent of the company's annual revenue. In addition, companies must provide data leak reports within 72 hours.

Even if the company does not conduct business with the EU, it is possible that the new law will have an impact on the standards of securing global security in the future. Therefore companies operating in the EU or with data subject to the effect of the GDPR are trying to ensure compliance with this document in advance.
