BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 20. Armenia is one of the aging countries, UNFPA (UN Population Fund Armenia) Population and Development Project Coordinator Anna Hovhannisyan said, Trend reports citing Armenian media.
"According to the UN, a country is defined as 'aging' when the share of older people exceeds 7 percent. In Armenia, the proportion of people aged 65 years and older is approximately 14 percent, which means that the country is among the aging states," she said.
Such a phenomenon is inherent in all those countries where the total fertility rate is low and tends to decrease, the coordinator noted.
"According to UNFPA projections, the proportion of older people will reach 22-24 percent by 2050, which means that one in four or five persons will be retirees," she added.
