Georgian Defence Minister Dimitri Shashkin is in the U.S. on an official visit. The purpose of the visit is consultations on issues of military cooperation between Georgia and the United States, the Defence Ministry said on Thursday.

Shashkin has already met with Senators David Vitter and James Inhofe and Congressmen Joe Wilson and Rob Whitman.

The agreement on deepening military cooperation between the two countries was discussed during the meeting.

Shashkin noted that the implementation of the agreement raises Georgian-American military cooperation to a new level. He added that the main areas of cooperation are the military exercises and training in the area of ​​operational control of the air and air defence, military defence and engineering teaching and training. Also included are training in helicopter support and preparation of technical level instructors of sergeants and junior officers trained in management at the brigade headquarters.

The team of U.S. experts will arrive in Georgia in September in order to train the Georgian military engineers.
