The US flag fluttered Sunday over the new US embassy in Berlin, weeks before the commanding new building is to be officially opened on July 4 by former US president George Bush, the dpa reported.

Removals staff completed on Saturday evening the relocation from a nearby building which served as US embassy for decades.

The new, sandstone-clad complex has its front door on prestigious Pariser Platz and other frontages overlooking the Holocaust Memorial and the sprawling Tiergarten city park, close to the German capital's Brandenburg Gate triumphal arch.

"The Stars and Stripes are flying over Pariser Platz," said a diplomat.

Bush, the father of current US President George W Bush, is set to preside at the inauguration on US Independence Day.
