Bomb hoax in Czech capital amid European terrorist warnings

A bomb hoax featuring 16 suspicious packages mounted to street lights caused a flurry of police activity in the Czech capital Prague in the night to Tuesday, amid global concern about a heightened threat of terrorism in Europe, DPA reported.

None of the packages, which were all removed overnight by bomb disposal experts, contained actual explosives, a police spokeswoman told the CT24 broadcaster.

She said future reports of suspicious activity would nevertheless continue to be taken seriously, especially since the neighbourhood in the Mala Strana district where the packages were placed is home to several foreign embassies.

The Czech government had on Sunday boosted security measures at Prague's Ruzyne Airport and other unnamed locations "at risk." But Deputy Interior Minister Michal Moroz said in a television broadcast there was no indication that the Czech Republic was a direct target of terrorist attack plans.
