( Cihan ) - " Turkey should, regardless of the conditions, strengthen its bonds with Europe," said Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, current holder of the rotating EU presidency.

Speaking at the Europe Forum in Berlin on Wednesday, Merkel stressed that the efforts to bond Turkey to the union resulted in major changes in Turkey.

Merkel evaluated the latest developments on the political scene in Turkey and characterized them as "exciting and interesting."

The chancellor pointed out that the reforms and changes in the Turkish law were significant. She also highlighted that the parliament acted according to democratic principles when complying with the decision of the constitutional court on cancelling the first round of presidential vote and eventually called for early general elections.

Merkel went on to say that negotiations on three more chapters might start during Germany's presidency and that she would discuss the issue with the newly elected French President Nicholas Sarkozy.
