Turkmenistan seeks to transit electricity to Turkey via Iran, Donya-e-eqtesad News Daily reported.

The country plans to become one the region's biggest electricity exporters by 2020, and has signed a contract with a Turkish private company to export electricity to Ankara.

Iran currently buys electricity from Turkmenistan but by the recent agreement it will even receive money to transit Turkmenistan's electricity.

Mohammad Parsa, an official with Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines said that Iran currently exports technical and engineering services to Turkmenistan in exchange for electricity imports.

"By transiting Turkmen electricity to Turkey, Iran may lose a $200-million market," Parsa said.

He further said that Iran should not give in to international sanctions and just rely on transiting electricity, adding that private sector can boost Iran's electricity exports," Parsa added.

Iran's Deputy Energy Minister Mohammad Behzad said earlier this month that Iran has constructed power plants twice as many as the average number of power plants which have been constructed in the world during the past decade.

Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.
