Group of Young People Chained Themselves to Iron Fences in   Baku

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / On 16 November a group Dalga Youth Movement held a demonstration in Old City in Baku, requiring preservation of the ecology and historical monuments in the capital. The young people chained themselves to the iron fences of the Maiden's Tower to draw the attention to this problem.

Construction works were carried out in the Old City until January 2007 which brought threats to the historical and architectural monuments and polluted preserves.

Dalga Youth Movement decided to hold a demonstration to attract attention to these problems. "We should ourselves take care about the cleanness of our city and protect its historical monuments and call on everybody to join this," the young people said. Several minutes later the policemen came to the demonstrators and took the flag of the youth movement.

Some 15 participants of the demonstration were detained and taken to the police department.

The Head of Old City Protection Department, Kamran Imanov, who arrived in screen said that he does not support that the young people inflict damage to the iron fences hold the demonstration in such form. According to him, the internal part of the preserve is clean and the streets are washed with cars and no new buildings will be constructed there.
