Rome hosted a conference of foreign ministers on 'New approaches to reform of the UN Security Council' chaired by Italy and Spain.

Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov represented Azerbaijan at the conference attended by representatives from 70 countries, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

The purpose of the conference held for the third time at the initiative of the Italian government, is to create conditions for political dialogue of UN member countries from around the world on the subject of the reform of the UN Security Council.

Mammadyarov said during his speech that the UN system as a whole and in particular the Security Council needs reform and transformation in order to respond to multilateral challenges and threats of today.

While speaking of improving the effectiveness of the UN Security Council activity, he stressed the importance of unconditional fulfilment the organisation's decisions by the UN member states and in particular resolutions aimed at maintaining peace and security throughout the world.

The foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Albania, Elmar Mammadyarov and Edmond Panariti met during the event. The sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest at the meeting.

Edmond Panariti invited Azerbaijani foreign minister to visit Albania.
