Lawyer Asks to Return Archive of Azerbaijani Newspaper

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend K.Ramazanova / Process took place with regards to the appeal of jailed editor-in-chief of Gundelik Azerbaijan and Realni Azerbaijan newspapers.

Eynulla Fatullayev was charged with the accusations of threats of terrorism, infusing national, race, social and religious enmity, as well as deviation from the tax payment.

During the process in Baku Appeal Court on 28 December, Fatullayev's lawyer Isakhan Ashurov asked the judge to return the archive in newspaper's computers.

Fatullayev said that the confiscated materials in the computers are his intellectual property, product of journalistic researches and asked to return them.

The court will make an assessment on this issue in the closing decision.

Expressing attitude towards the statements of the senior officials that the journalists are not arrested due to professional activity, Fatullayev said that he was arrested due to the materials written by him.

Fatullayev asked the court to cancel the sentence. "If the court makes an objective decision, the case will not be sent to the European Court on Human Rights," Fatullayev said.

Fatullayev's article 'Aliyev will go to war' contained challenges to terrorism. In the letter sent to Azerbaijan's Ministry of National Security, the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov, said tat the information on possible attack of Iran against Azerbaijan led to concerns and panics amongst the foreign companies working in Azerbaijan.
