Azerbaijan's Sumgayit and Georgia's Rustavi are enhancing economic and cultural ties.

A delegation from Sumgayit visited Rustavi from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 upon the invitation of Rustavi Mayor Mamuka Chikovani, the Sumgayit City Administration told Trend today.

During the visit, the delegation met with city officials and Kvemo Kartli Governor Davit Kirkitadze. They also attended a festival dedicated to Rustavi City Day. Rustavi is the capital of the Kvemo Kartli region.

At the meetings, the sides exchanged views on prospects to enhance cooperation between these cities and stressed the need to strengthen economic and cultural ties.

Speaking at the event, Sumgayit City Hall Deputy Chief Akif Guliyev said the residents of the two cities have long-term partnerships and friendships.

The event was also attended by delegations from Inegel (Turkey), Ivano-Frankivsk (Ukraine) and Lodz (Poland).

Sumgayit and Rustavi have cooperated for over 50 years. Both cities are industrial giants, which have been heavily involved in metallurgy and chemical production since World War II.

A delegation from the Kvemo-Kartli region visited Azerbaijan in 2007. An agreement was signed to restore fraternal relations between the two cities. The agreement triggered a new stage in the development of bilateral relations.
