By Sadraddin Aghjayev – Trend:

The global electric vehicle market increased by over 40 percent in 2020, Trend reports on Apr.30 referring to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

According to the agency, in the first quarter of 2021, global electric car sales rose by 2.5 times compared to the same period of 2020.

“In 2020, 3 million electric cars were sold, 41 percent more than in 2019. This growth tendency will be maintained this year,” the agency said.

The number of light electric vehicles in the world has exceeded ten million units, and the number of trucks and electric buses has reached approximately 1 million units.

“In 2020, Europe overtook China as the world’s largest electric vehicle market for the first time. In Europe, this production rose to 1.4 million units, and in China to 1.2 million,” noted the agency, adding that an increase in the production of electric vehicles in the future will reduce emissions of harmful gases to zero worldwide.

“Governments of the world countries will need to put in place policies to promote the roll-out of electric vehicles through applying support packages for investing in the production of accumulators and creating reliable infrastructure for charging such vehicles,” the agency said.

Besides, according to the agency, over the next ten years, the production of electric vehicles will only grow.

“In the Sustainable Development Scenario, we forecast that the growth of freight and light electric vehicles reaches 145 million by 2030,” added the agency.
