Foreign direct investments in Georgia exceed $650 million, the Georgian State Statistics Service reported today. The number is 58 percent lower than the figure for 2008.

Foreign direct investments in Georgia exceed $650 million, the Georgian State Statistics Service reported today. The number is 58 percent lower than the figure for 2008.

The top foreign investor in 2009 was the UAE, which accounted for 62 percent of all foreign investments. The UAE invested $162.8 million in Georgia.

Turkey ranked second in terms of investments at $97.9 million. The third major investor was Panama, which invested $74.7 million in Georgia in 2009.

The majority of the investments fell to the real estate sector at $147.4 million, comprising 22 percent of the investments.

The industry (21.2 percent of the investments), construction (16 percent) and communications (15 percent) sectors were also appealing to foreign investors.
