Kazakh sea port of Aktau plans to increase cargo transshipment to 16 million tons per year after the construction of new berth for dry cargo ships, Novosti-Kazakhstan quoted Kazakh Minister of Transport and Communications Askar Zhumagaliyev as saying.

"A feasibility study on the construction of berth for dry cargo ships is developing which will bring seaport capacity from 13.5 million tons to 16 million tons," Zhumagaliyev said on Wednesday.

According to the minister, a slight decline in cargo transshipment through Aktau port was observed in 2011 due to reorientation of oil transshipment to pipeline transport. The port transshipped 12.4 million tons of oil-loading and dry cargo in 2011 compared to 12.8 million tons transshipped in 2010.

Aktau port, located on the east coast of the Caspian Sea, is Kazakhstan's only port for international transportation of various dry cargo, crude oil and petroleum products.

The port was established as a transport hub of several modes of transport such as rail, road, water and pipeline. The Aktau port is a part of three international transport corridors - TRACECA, North-South and INOGATE.
