An asphalt plant equipped with German technology is to be put into operation in the Garlyk area of Lebap province in the east of Turkmenistan, the government of Turkmenistan announced on Monday.

The plant's production capacity is about 300,000 tons of asphalt per year. The first output of the plant is being used in the construction of roads for the town. In addition, the reconstruction of the Farab-Hojambaz-Kerkichi- Köýtendag -Garlyk highway with a total length of 375 kilometres will be take place due to the plant.

According to the announcement, in February this year a cement plant with a capacity of 1.4 million tons per year was commissioned in Garlyk by the Turkish Polimeks Insaat Taahhüt ve San. Tic. A.S Company. Recently Garlyk acquired the status of an important industrial centre in the eastern region, mostly because of the construction of the largest mining and processing complex for the production of potash fertilisers in Central Asia with a capacity of 1.4 million tons per year.

This enterprise with the estimated first phase cost of over $1 billion has been under construction by Belgorkhimprom OJSC (Republic of Belarus) since August 2009. The estimated construction term is five years.

It is expected that the commissioning of the Garlyk Mining and Processing Complex will create 5000 jobs. Production of mineral fertilisers is one of the most profitable industries. The main factors are the increase of the world population and the demand for grain crops and oil-bearing plants for biofuel production.
