The number of automobiles in Greater Baku will increase by almost two times by 2030, according to the text of the "Greater Baku regional development plan" which is currently discussed by the Azerbaijani government. The approval of the plan is planned for the end of this year.

"Today, there are 250 cars for each 1,000 people in Greater Baku, or Baku itself, as well as Absheron peninsula and Sumgayit. It is expected that this indicator will hit 480 cars for each 1,000 people in 2030," project says.

Today, there is 1.62 trips car trips per person per day in Greater Baku (it is expected that this indicator will hit 2.5 trips). Transport is used 4.231 million times a day in the area (prognosis for 2030- 9.46 million), 2.231 million of which is carried out by public transport (by 6.54 million times) and 2 million of trips- by personal motor transport (by 2.95 million times)
"Considering the prognosis on the growth of Greater Baku population by 1.52 times, as well as the growth of economy, the profit of population and the number of cars, the demand on transport using will increase by 2.13 times," the project text says.

Thus, in the case of maintaining current conditions, traffic jams will occur on all major Baku roads.

"The majority of the congestion is expected on Tbilisi, Ziya Bunyadov and Nobel avenues. Congestion will increase in the Northern part of the city between Absheron, Sumgayit and Sabunchi, as well as on new road forks which will be laid in the direction from the West to the East. Moreover, connections between Tbilisi Avenue and the International bus station are also problematic. The transport corridor along Sumgayit highway will carry 435,000 passengers per day by 2030. The flow of passengers in concrete points of the Tbilisi Avenue will reach 630,000 people a day. Another important corridor of the public transport is Baku-Sabunchi-Khazar through which nearly 250,000 people is transported," the project text notes.
