Road accidents per annum cost Iran 190 trillion rials (about $7.7 billion), ISNA quoted road transport expert Amir Ahmad Sepehri as saying on December 25.

"Fast speed accounts for 85 percent of the accidents," he said.

"If the current situation continues, fatalities will reach 40,000 by the next seven years," he added.

Based on the UN projections, road accidents in developing countries will increase by 60-80 percent by 2020, he noted.

"Other main factors, namely human errors, vehicle faults, inappropriate roads, bad weather, and improper laws, lead to road accidents across the country," he added.
