Iran, India to talk over bilateral preferential trade agreement

TEHRAN, Iran, Aug.1

Trend:

Iran has expressed readiness to hold sixth round of negotiations for a bilateral preferential trade agreement (PTA) with India via videoconference, official in Trade and Promotion Organization of Iran Hossein Bamiri said, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"Signing preferential trade agreement would increase trade volume between the two countries. In the coming negotiations the two sides would discuss articles that remain from the previous rounds of talks, to reach a general agreement over the PTA draft," said Bamiri.

"The preferential trade agreement would create opportunity for competition for Iranian companies in trade with India," he added.

Head of Iran's Trade and Promotion Organization, Hamid Zadboom held a meeting with India's Ambassador in Iran last week and insisted on continuing negotiations for PTA. India's Ambassador in Iran has also indicated his country is dedicated to sticking to its commitment with Iran.

"Although Iran and India have discussed the PTA over a decade, despite five meetings, the agreement has not been signed yet," said Gaddam Dharmendra.

Iranian Ambassador in India Ali Chegini has recently told Indian merchants in a meeting that signing PTA would open the path for bartering agricultural products for medicine between the two countries.
