Tajikistan warns Central Asian countries about water shortage again

Tajikistan Materials 21 January 2009 16:16 (UTC +04:00)

This year Central Asian countries are likely to face water shortage because hydroelectric power stations of Tajikistan drawdown the water stored in reservoirs, Foreign Minister of Tajikistan Hamrokhon Zarifi said at a press conference in Dushanbe, reported CA-NEWS.

To meet Tajikistan's electricity needs, the Nurek and Kairakum hydroelectric power stations discharge 50 cm of stored water daily due to suspension of Turkmen electricity imports through Uzbekistan's territory," Zarifi said.

"The constrained drawdown of water from reservoirs can lead to water shortage in downstream countries," Zarifi added.
