Iran and Turkey have signed a new counselor agreement in a bid to facilitate economic activities on both sides of the border, an Iranian official says, Press TV reported.

Speaking after the 13th meeting of Iran-Turkey Joint Consular Commission in the Turkish capital of Ankara, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Qashqavi said the agreement was a step towards improving consular relations between the two neighbors.

"For the first time meetings were held at the deputy foreign minister level, which indicates improved relations between the two countries," Qashqavi told IRNA on Thursday.

He also met with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, during which he expressed hope that the document would open doors for extended cooperation between Ankara and Tehran.

"We hope that all Iranians get the opportunity to visit Turkey and the Turkish people to visit Iran in order to get further acquainted with each other's values and culture," Davutoglu said during the meeting held at his home.
