Hundreds of Syrians and their Jordanian supporters on Saturday celebrated the Arab League's decision to suspend Syria's membership in the organization, a sign of protest against the Syrian regime's continued crackdown on pro-reform activists, dpa reported.

Participants, who gathered in front of the Syrian embassy in Amman, chanted slogans and raised placards urging the Arab League to impose a no-fly zone on Syria and to recognize the opposition Syrian Transitional Council (STC) as the legal representative of the Syrian people.

An intense Jordanian security presence around the Syrian diplomatic mission in the neighbourhood of Abdoun prevented scores of activists supportive of the Syrian regime from approaching the pro-reform rally.

Earlier Saturday, dozens of Jordanians supporting the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad demonstrated outside the building housing the local offices of the Arab satellite broadcasters, Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya, accusing them of carrying out US schemes by backing the unrest in Syria.
