EU presidency plans summit, seeks "new trust" with Russia

The European Union is to hold a summit with Russia in late May to improve bilateral relations, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos announced in an official visit Tuesday in Moscow, DPA reported.

Speaking in his capacity of Spain's presidency of the EU, Moratinos said "we would like also to speak to points such as energy security about which there have been differences in the past."

Madrid is seeking a "new trust" between Russian and the EU, he said after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

A row a year ago over gas deliveries between Russia and Ukraine, a transport hub to Europe, led to friction between Brussels and Moscow.

Lavrov said relations between his country and the EU were "of great strategic importance."

Spain took over the EU presidency on January 1. The summit is due to take place May 30.
