A US-led special forces team killed a rogue Afghan soldier who shot an Australian soldier to death last month, Defence Minister Stephen Smith announced in Canberra Monday, DPA reported.

The Afghan soldier shot Lance Corporal Andrew Jones, 25, four times while they were on guard duty together in the Chora Valley.

Shafied Ullah then fled the base where Australian forces were training local troops. Another Afghan soldier fired at Ullah as he ran but missed.

Smith said Ullah was killed during an ambush in his home province after a 20-day manhunt. His brother was detained by a coalition troops led by US soldiers with a limited Australian involvement.

Ullah's brother was being questioned to try to determine a motive for the shooting.

A total of 27 Australian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan.
