US President Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday discussed measures to hold Libyan leader Moamer Gadaffi accountable for a brutal crackdown on anti-government protestors in the North African country, dpa reported.

The two leaders spoke by telephone as the international community is weighing its options, including sanctions, after hundreds and possibly thousands of protesters have been killed in Libya by pro- Gaddafi forces over the past few days.

The White House said Obama and Erdogan "expressed their deep concern about the Libyan government's use of violence against its people, which is completely unacceptable, and discussed appropriate and effective ways for the international community to immediately respond."

Obama on Thursday telephoned with the leaders of Britain, France and Italy. The United Nations Security Council was also discussing the Libyan crisis for the third day in a row on Friday.
