An officer of Azerbaijani Air Forces, Lieutenant-Colonel Natig Baliyev committed suicide in his apartment in Baku, Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry said on April 8.

The military prosecutor's office launched a criminal case into the incident, and an investigation is underway.

A number of media outlets reported that Baliyev's suicide was allegedly related to his demotion, the ministry said.

Baliyev was appointed to a high post at the Defence Ministry on July 12, 2013, and on January 11, 2014 he was assigned the rank of lieutenant-colonel, according to the ministry's message.

The ministry also gave him a three-room apartment in Baku.

The Defense Ministry condemns persons disseminating false information, and recommends the media outlets to be more responsible in covering the armed forces' activities, according to message.
