Iranian Minister of Road and Urban Development Abbas Akhondi said that through private investment, 400 passenger wagons would join the country's railways fleet in the current Iranian-calendar year (which started March 21).

He stated that in the previous Iranian fiscal year (ended on March 20), the Tehran-Mashhad fleet expanded its capacity by 5 percent, while Tehran-Gorgan wagons were renewed, IRNA news agency reported March 31.

Commenting on the Iranian New Year holiday trip, he added that from March 16 to 30, 1.26 million people traveled by train, a large part of which trips included long trips such as the Tehran-Mashhad route.

The official reported that 50 percent of the trips were made to the religious tourist hub Mashhad.

"In fact trains travel to Mashhad from 25 cities. In other long routes such as Tehran-Zahedan, Tehran-Bandar Abbas, and Tehran-Yazd also good services have been offered to the passengers," he said.

He further pointed to last year's railways accidents and added that the country's rail network is going to be equipped with smart control systems to reduce accidents.

Islamic Republic of Iran Railways Company Managing Director Mohsen Pourseyyed Aghaee said March 23 that by the end of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2016) Iran 's entire rail network will be equipped with a smart (electronic) control system.
He said that the line's equipment cost €32 million, maintaining that from that day on, the line's cargo and passenger transfer capacity will increase two to three times.
