Iran's intelligence forces have arrested four members of a terrorist group who entered the country to carry out acts of sabotage, the Islamic Republic intelligence ministry said in a statement on June 1.

The team members have confessed that they had plans to incite public opinion against the Islamic Republic through bombing and terror acts following recent incidents in the city of Mahabad, the official website of the ministry said.

Early in May hundreds of citizens of the northwestern city of Mahabad in West Azerbaijan province held protests against the suspicious death of a young girl after she fell from the window of a fourth floor room of a hotel she worked in.

Tension erupted after rumors spread around the city claiming that the 25-year girl fell while trying to run away from a security guard's attempt to rape her.

The intelligence ministry's statement reads that the arrested terrorists plotted to spread crisis and commit acts of assassination and point the finger at the government in order to stir up public anger.

However, the intelligence forces identified and arrested them before they could conduct any act.

Weapons and military ammunition were discovered and seized from the terror team, the statement reads.

No further details were published about the identity of members, exact date or location of the group's arrest.
