An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale hit the Turkish part of the Mediterranean Sea yesterday, CNN Turk channel reported on Monday.

According to the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute of Bogazici University the earthquake occurred at 02:30 local time.

Turkey is located in a seismically active area and earthquakes that often lead to loss of human life frequently occur.

The strongest fluctuations in the earth's crust in Turkey were registered in 1999 in the Marmara Sea. At that time the magnitude of the tremors was 7.4 and caused the deaths of about 18,000 people.
