German Foreign Ministry has decided to increase its humanitarian aid to Syria by a further 40 million euros (1 euro = 1.23 U.S. dollars), said a statement, Xinhua reported.

It brings the total amount of humanitarian assistance to the region, which has been promised by the ministry this year, to 162 million euros.

"It cannot be accepted that families go hungry and are freezing because aid agencies have no money to support them," said German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The World Food Program (WFP) reportedly announced on Monday that it had to suspend its food aid in Syria and neighboring countries due to lack of donor funds.

According to German Foreign Ministry's statement, the additional 40-million-euro aid will be used to support the WFP and other aid measures by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross in providing help to Syria, Jordan and Turkey.
