Azerbaijani foreign ministry: Ceasefire violation during OSCE monitoring is Armenian provocation

Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 21 / Trend E. Mehdiyev /

The ceasefire violation on the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops during OSCE monitoring is not a surprise, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov told media on Monday.

According to him, this provocation is carried out by the Armenian side almost daily and the violation of the ceasefire during the monitoring is one such provocation.

Field assistants and personal representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office have not clearly assessed the situation since 1997 until now, the deputy minister said.

"For some unknown reason, the personal representative of OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Andrzej Kasprzyk and his assistants have not determined the line of fire, so there is a sense of impunity," he stressed.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
