NATO Summit Launched in Bucharest (video)

Azerbaijan, Baku, 3 April / corr Trend A.Gasimova / A meeting of the NATO Council, the highest political organization of the alliance, was launched in Bucharest on 3 April.

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the NATO Secretary-General delivered the opening speech at the meeting in which he thanked Romania for the well organized summit. In his turn the Romanian President Trian Basesku stressed the significance of the organization of the summit in Bucharest, noting Romania's efforts taken before for the membership at the alliance.

The meeting of the summit is held behind closed doors with the participation of the President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai, UN Secretary General Ban Kee Moon, the European Commission Chairman Jose Manuel Borroza, European Union High Representative for General Foreign Policy and Security Policy Javier Solana, as well as representatives from the World Bank.

Other notable events within the format of the Bucharest summit will be top-level meetings of the Council of Euro-Atlantic Partnership, NATO -Russia Council and the Ukraine-NATO Commission.

This NATO Summit in Bucharest is the most significant event in the alliance's history, because the Romanian capital assembled around 60 heads of states and governments from non-NATO member-countries and partners.
