NAP: Azerbaijani authorities interested in holding transparent and democratic elections

The Azerbaijani authorities again want to hold transparent, democratic and fair elections, and will cooperate with all international organizations in this direction, Ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) Deputy Chairman Ali Ahmadov said at the reception of OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Department Head Nicholas Kacharovski today.

The Azerbaijani authorities again want to hold transparent, democratic and fair elections, and will cooperate with all international organizations in this direction, Ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) Deputy Chairman Ali Ahmadov said at the reception of OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Department Head  Nicholas Kacharovski today.

"The main purpose of making changes and amendments to the Electoral Code is the development of electoral practice, improvement of electoral practice in Azerbaijan and the maximum combination of it with the global practice," Ahmadov said.

Parliamentary elections will be held in Azerbaijan in fall 2010. Previous elections were held in November 2005. The elections are held according to the majority system in Azerbaijan's 125 constituencies.

Kacharovski, in turn, expressed gratitude on behalf of the organization for the open and sincere attitude shown by the Azerbaijani side in connection with the elections.

The meeting was also attended by ODIHR specialist Jonathan Stonestreet

and Democratization Programme Manager of the OSCE Office in Baku Jacqueline Carpenter.
