The 51st International Mathematical Olympiad was opened in the Palace of Independence in Astana July 7.
"The most prestigious world intellectual contest - the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) will be held in Astana July 7-17 for the first time in the former Soviet Union zone," Kazakh Education and Science Minister and Chairman of the State Organizing Committee on preparation and holding of the International Mathematical Olympics Janseit Tuymebayev said at the opening ceremony.
According to the Olympic Organizing Committee, the Olympiad is attended by representatives of 102 countries, including Azerbaijan.
"A total of 1,200 people, including teams of pupils, their leaders, observers, mathematicians, scientists, winners of the past Olympiads, take part in the event," he said.
The International Mathematical Olympiad involves members of the IMO Advisory Council, world-famous scientists from Hungary, South Africa, Korea, Germany, Netherlands and etc.
