Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug.20 / Trend, R.Hafizoglu /
The extension of the Russian 102nd Military Base's stay in Gumri, Armenia will not threaten the region, head of the Turkish Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Vahid Erdem said.
"The agreement is not a serious threat to Azerbaijan and Turkey," Erdem said.
Russia and Armenia recently signed a protocol amending a 1995 bilateral agreement on the base, RIA Novosti reported. The document was undersigned by the Armenian and Russian defense ministers. The original contract's validity was 25 years. The agreement extended the contract for another 24 years.
Baku hopes that Moscow will fulfill its commitments on the non-usage of the base's resources and arms against Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elkhan Polukhov told Trend today.
