From now on, the academic year in Georgia will begin on Sept. 15 and end on June 15, Education Minister Dmitri Shashkin said at a briefing today.

Schools will no longer decide themselves when they can start and end teaching, he said.

"The academic year will begin on Sept. 15 this year," he said. "There will be two semesters - the first will end on Dec. 24 and will be followed by a winter vacation, and the second semester will end on June 15. The winter vacation will run until Jan. 20."

However, first-grade students and high school seniors will end their studies on May 20.

The ministry also decided to make a week-long Easter holiday for schools.

"There will be many more changes, and I will make a statement in this regard later," Shashkin said.
