PACE delegation makes pre-electoral visit to Azerbaijan

A five-member PACE delegation led by Paul Wille (Belgium, ALDE) will carry out a pre-electoral mission to Baku from 19 to 21 October 2010, ahead of the parliamentary elections on 7 November 2010, to assess the electoral framework and campaign, the PACE website reported.

A five-member PACE delegation led by Paul Wille (Belgium, ALDE) will carry out a pre-electoral mission to Baku from 19 to 21 October 2010, ahead of the parliamentary elections on 7 November 2010, to assess the electoral framework and campaign, the PACE website reported.

The parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are scheduled for November 7, 2010. Previous parliamentary elections were held in November 2005. Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority system in 125 constituencies.

The delegation will meet the President of the Republic Ilham Aliyev, the Speaker of the Parliament, the Minister of the Interior, and the representatives of the political parties and coalitions standing for election. Meetings are also scheduled with the Chair of the Central Electoral Commission, the Chair of the Constitutional Court, the Azerbaijani delegation to the PACE, the Head of the OSCE/ODIHR mission in Azerbaijan, and the representatives of civil society, the media, and the diplomatic community.

A full 30-member delegation from the Assembly will be in the country on the day of the vote to observe the elections.

A press conference is scheduled for 21 October at 3 pm at the Park Inn Hotel in Baku.
