At Thursday's meeting, The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan approved Jamil Hasanli as a presidential candidate from the National Council.

During the meeting, held under the chairmanship of CEC head Mazahir Panahov, the plenipotentiary representatives of Jamil Hasanli were also registered.

Subsequently, the text, form, the number and the order of preparing notifications for informing the voters about the place and the time of elections were approved.

In addition, CEC decision No 17/85 (September 4, 2008) on formation of new press-group under CEC was amended at the meeting.

The documents of 21 candidates for participation in presidential elections were presented to the Central Election Commission.

The CEC has approved the candidacy of 17 people.

Earlier, the CEC approved the candidacies of the chairman of the ruling New Azerbaijan party, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the chairman of Azadlig party Ahmed Oruj, self-nominated candidate, lawyer Ilgar Mammadov (Altay), chairman of Umid party Igbal Aghazade, the chairman of the Liberal Democratic party of Azerbaijan Fuad Aliyev, chairman of the Citizen and Development party Ali Aliyev, the chairman of the Social Democratic party of Azerbaijan Araz Alizade, the chairman of the United Popular Front party of Azerbaijan Gudrat Hasanguliyev, the chairman of Modern Musavat party Hafiz Hajiyev, self-nominated candidates, Zahid Oruj, Gudrat Isagov, Ismayil Yusifov, Elshan Hasanov, the chairman of the National Revival party Faraj Guliyev, the Director of the East-West Research Centre Arastun Orujlu and the chairman of Adalat party Ilyas Ismayilov.

Azerbaijani citizens who have the voting right (active or passive), initiative group of voters, political parties, blocks of political parties have the right to nominate the candidacy for participation in the presidential elections.

Presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on October 9. Previous presidential elections were held on October 15, 2008.

Presidential elections in Azerbaijan are held each five years.
