BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 14. Iran is interested in further strengthening relations with Azerbaijan, the Chairman of the Parliament of the Islamic Council of Iran Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said during a meeting in Geneva with Speaker of Azerbaijani Parliament Sahiba Gafarova, Trend reports via the Azerbaijani Parliament.
Congratulating once again on the holding of extraordinary elections to the Azerbaijani Parliament and the re-election of Sahiba Ghafarova to the post of Chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliament, the Chairman of the Iranian Parliament expressed his country's interest in further strengthening relations with Azerbaijan. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf noted that Iran attaches special importance to relations with Azerbaijan. He added that the position on further expansion of ties will be continued at the level of parliaments.
According to him, Iran believes that further strengthening of economic and cultural ties will contribute to peace and security in the whole region. It was noted that opportunities for economic cooperation, including transportation, and regional communications should be widely used. The Chairman of the Iranian Parliament noted the importance of cooperation in the “3+3” format.
Speaker of Azerbaijani Parliament Sahiba Gafarova noted that cooperation relations are developing between Azerbaijan and Iran in various directions. She emphasized the importance of agreements reached in bilateral format and joint projects implemented in terms of further expansion of cooperation.
Gafarova emphasized that Azerbaijan attaches great importance to ensuring peace, security, and cooperation in the region.
Moreover, issues of cooperation between the parliaments were discussed at the meeting. Speaker Sahiba Gafarova recalled previous meetings with the Chairman of the Parliament of the Islamic Council of Iran, during which the current state of inter-parliamentary ties and possibilities of their further expansion were discussed.
Meanwhile, it was noted that parliamentary elections were held in both countries in 2024. New compositions of working groups on inter-parliamentary relations have been formed in the parliaments of Azerbaijan and Iran. The legislative bodies of the countries have fruitful cooperation relations with several international parliamentary organizations, including such international parliamentary organizations as the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement, Inter-Parliamentary Union, Asian Parliamentary Assembly, Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and Parliamentary Assembly of the Economic Cooperation Organization.
The meeting also discussed issues related to the parliamentary conference to be held in November this year in Baku within the framework of COP29. The importance of joint activities of parliaments at multilateral platforms on climate issues was emphasized.
In the course of the conversation, the sides exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.
