Azerbaijani women are not ready to hold official posts: State Committee Chairperson

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 5 / Trend , M.Aliyev /

Azerbaijani women do not feel readiness to hold official posts, the Azerbaijani State Committee for Family, Women and Children Chairperson Hijran Huseynova said yesterday.

She said that the Committee has conducted research in the regions where women confessed that they are afraid to take responsibility.

"We support women in all regions of the country. Earlier 1.2 percent of women participated in the last municipal elections, now this number reached 30 percent. We hope to improve this figure also during the parliamentary elections in 2010," the Committee head said.

There are no women ministers in Azerbaijan, while four women hold ministerial posts in the neighboring Islamic Republic of Iran. Given the fact that the female population is 53 percent, women hold only 11 percent of parliamentary seats in the Azerbaijani Parliament.

According to the World Economic Forum's statistics, Azerbaijan ranks 119 among 134 countries on the number of women holding official positions, Azerbaijani MP Gultekin Hajibayli said before.

Azerbaijani municipal elections are scheduled for December 23. About 15,682 members are expected to be elected for 1,718 municipalities. About 32 thousand candidates will attend the elections, 6222 of them are women.
